Visual Acuity Test / Snellen Testing
This uses an eye chart to measure how well you can distinguish object details and shapes (particularly the alphabet) at various distances.
Intraocular Pressure Test
Intraocular pressures are measured using either an Icare or Tonopen. Anaesthetic drops are placed in the eye and the instrument being used is tapped lightly on the surface of the eye providing a pressure reading.
Amsler Grid
The Amsler Grid is a basic screening test (which can also be used at home). It is used to assess the macula and monitor any changes in vision. The Amsler grid has dark horizontal and vertical lines forming a grid. Distortion of the grid is suggestive of irregularities to the contour of your retina. If any changes are detected in the grid (like waviness, dark patches, holes or blurred lines of the grid) you must contact Dr Hilford as soon as possible.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
OCT scanning is a non-invasive imaging test that examines the cell layers of the retina and optic nerve in detail. This information enables diagnosis and monitoring of ocular conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, cystoid macular oedema, diabetic retinopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy, epiretinal membranes, macular holes and more.
Fluorescein Angiography
The fluorescein angiogram is a diagnostic test used in ophthalmology clinics to assess the blood vessels of the retina. The whole procedure takes between 15 to 20 minutes, and the results are available immediately. It is a safe procedure and has a low risk of severe adverse reactions.
Fluorescein angiography allows for abnormal areas in the retina to be highlighted by the dye, and as such it is used to diagnose and monitor many eye conditions.
